This semester I enrolled in Speech1017 instructed by Professor Canuto. During my time in the class I have learned the functions of communication, models of communication, misconception of communication, and human communication. This class is very informative; each day thereââ¬â¢s a new lesson about communication, how communication affects who you interact with, your culture, and how other ethnicity communicate with each other. But the lesson that has been a favorite of mine is Chapter 2 The changing world of communication. Chapter 2 described how communication evolved through the centuries and how technology also evolved with communication. Professor Canuto would show video clips that relate to the topic, if there is a statistic she would have a video relating to the statistic that makes lesson worth listening to. There was a lesson explaining how communicating went from face-to-face communicating to texting. I could relate to the topic because I fear talking to anyone I do not know, but if could get any girl number and randomly text them Iââ¬â¢ll do that any day, because it seems like when talking face-to-face with someone you donââ¬â¢t know, you think insecure thoughts about yourself how you look, how you speak to that person, constantly thinking if he/she doesnt like you. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Professor Canuto can relate to the students within the class she is young so the events that happens in a young adults daily life. In Chapter 2 the Professor explains how communication is diverse different parts of the U. S. contains Americans who communicate the same but when another American foreign to that part of the U. S. will be in confusion not only in communication, in how they dress and different phrases they use in their vocabulary would be foreign to another person from outside their region but they all live within the same country. I believe that the class needs no changes the Professor teaches at a peace that every student canà follow along to. Professor Canuto is always happy but thatââ¬â¢s needed because the morning can make you look dead but her optimism helps ease the depression. Speech has become important to me, learning the origins of communication answers questions that are asked every day. Iââ¬â¢m looking forward to actually speaking reading speeches improving speaking in front of people killing my glossophobia. Speech has never been a big factor in my life I didnt really knew what the subject was about but Professor Canuto explains thoroughly every segment in each lesson given. Reaction paper free essay sample I. INTRODUCTION Having an educational field trip as a student of BAM ââ¬â IM at the AZUCARERA in tarlac on February 21, 2014 for half a day after the first plant visit, we had a good impact for our perspective in our course. Hacienda Luisita is popular sugar cane farm inTarlac. It was owned by the Cojuangcoââ¬â¢s and had a lot of history through the years. Itââ¬â¢s a 4. 435 hectares, like the size of Makati and Pasig City combined. It is very huge and a lot of farmers are working for the farm. It was shown how the company values there menpower, instead of calling them farmer, they call them planters as a sign of respect for the hard work that they are doing. They also value teamwork and cooperation. They treat each other as a family and makes sure that everyone has something out of there hard work. II. RATIONALE Field trips are important because it gives students a chance to learn hands on. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Also, traveling will give them a chance to see different places and learn new things up close and personal. Field trips are good learning tools which many universities always do. III. OBJECTIVES To be able to see personally how an industrial company works. To know how to manage an industrial company. To know the purpose and how innovation in an industrial company happens. IV. SUMMARY AND CONTENT This is the second plant visit we went is the Azacurera de Tarlac, we stayed for bus for half an hour, and when the first batch are done, we are the next, maybe the second to the last who will be tour of the company, we wore an helmet for our safety because the tour guide told us that sometimes an object falling from the top, and sometimes the helmet cracks, thatââ¬â¢s why we wore an helmet. Before we go to the production he lecture us a little information of what is azucarera is, after that we fall in line and go to the production, we first see the truck of sugarcane where falling from a hole, then after that we go to the production site, and there we can see how they create a sugar, I noticed again that some of the construction worker are not wearing proper PPE or personal protective equipment, and they also donââ¬â¢t have hazard signs, I think some of their machines are dangerous to approach, some of the machine are not lecture to us, we just exceeded some of them, thatââ¬â¢s why we donââ¬â¢t know what machine and description. V. REACTION PAPER POSITIVE: The positive of this, is when weââ¬â¢re in production all of the construction worker and other stuff there welcome us with a smile and there so kind when there touring us to the production site, even the construction worker are telling us what machine is their handling, and they even approach us near to see the machines. Much of the sugar comes from tarlac. Thatââ¬â¢s why we should be proud of this. NEGATIVE: Same of the enerrtech, here in azucarera, their not wearing proper PPE or personal protective equipment, the company should be aware of this, there should be thinking of their employees health or safety, because most of them are not proper uniform, it should be complete, because for me, safety first. If something happen to their employees there will be the one who will be responsible to them, some place donââ¬â¢t have hazard signs, I think some of machine are very dangerous to approach, they should be alert of this. VI. CONCLUSION VII. RECOMMENDATION Based on my observation, the challenges that the company should overcome will be the safety of there employees. The employee who was there doesnââ¬â¢t have personal protective equipments like helmets, gloves and even proper uniform. With the kind of work they are doing, itââ¬â¢s very essential for the employees to be protected. It will take a big damage to the company and its reputation if there will be an accident and no preventive measure has been taken. Another thing was the hazzard sign, it is also essential to have signs especially to machines that need extra carefulness when being handled. What I am trying to point is, the safetiness of the employees should always be a priority because the companyââ¬â¢s manpower is one of the key to its success, without them there will be no production. Reaction Paper free essay sample As students we go to school to learn, and that is why we attend our classes every day to learn so that our knowledge will increase, but as college students we are also obligated to attend seminars. Attending seminars is also important to shape the students to become more knowledgeable and professional and now we for the first time I attended a seminar which I know I can learn new things and discover more facts about life. For me attending in the seminars means added knowledge for us students to gain. I can say that the last seminar we attended is indeed enjoyable and we learned a lot from the speakers. Let us start with the guest speaker Dr. Honorato P. Panahon. He discussed about values and professionalism. I learn about dos and donââ¬â¢ts as being a professional someday. I also learned that as Information Technology students, our professionalism depends on the knowledge we gain in our schools that is why values and professional ethics is very important and must be known by all the Information Technology students so they will not violate any professional ethics code someday. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There is also a short story that was told by Dr. Panahon. To cut the story short, the story wants us to learn that there are many people in the world with different behaviors that is why all of them has characteristics which can lead them to make unethical actions sometimes. The next guess speaker was Dr. Zenaida R. Guillasper. She told us everything that we need to know about spiritual education. My spirit was uplift every time we pray. I can feel that Godââ¬â¢s blessing is coming from the heaver upon the earth. Actually she also tell that there are many hindrance along the way before she reached us and tell us the words of God but still she was able to tell us a wonderful speech about God. Dr. Guillasper wanted us to realize that we must love God, accept him as our savior, and repent with our sins. The last guess speaker was DR. Melissa Belinda P. Faronilo, Back then when I was taking up nursing in the same university, Dr. Faronilo was my professor in Psychology, and she is one of my favorite professors because of her wit. That is why, when I saw her in the stage, I know the discussion will be very enjoyable and at the same time informative. The discussion is fun, because we now know that we can identify our psychological behavior depends on our favorite shapes. Reaction Paper free essay sample The film was narrated by Steve Wozniak, co-developer of the Apple computer. The movie took off with Steve Jobs talking in a melodramatic way to the audience, it seems but as the angle of the scene shifts, it was shown that he was actually talking to a director and that they were currently in the middle of shooting a commercial which is for the Apple Computer. The scene then changes showing Steve Jobs talking about some sort of alliance formed between Apple Computer and Microsoft with Bill Gates in the screen (details of this scene was showed later on in the film). Then the film featured a flashback on the younger days of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak where they are shown to be caught up in a riot between students and police officers and running in the opposite direction of the tide of people. The movie then proceeds to narrate the events that led to the development of the first Apple computer. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The film also features the nerd character of Bill Gates who was then a nobody and even got ignored by Steve Jobs in a computer expo. The story then narrates how competition flared between the two leading companies and how they strived to outwit each other and finally, concluding in the scene where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates announced that they are good together. Bill Gates (Anthony Michael Hall overplaying Machiavelli) and Steve Jobs (Noah Wyle overplaying the hypocritical hippie). In the wings with one liners and side explanations are the designer of the Mac, Steve Wozniak (Joey Slotnick), and the two most famous right hand men of Microsoft, Paul Allen (Josh Hopkins) and Steve Ballmer (John Di Maggio). The film dutifully details the skyrocketing of Apple from a manufacturer of the first cookie cutter color PCs (the Apple II that didnt leave your high school until well after you did) to one of the biggest personal computer companies to the giant taken down by the people that helped build it up (dont you know, Microsoft helped make the original Macintosh operating system). The movie also showcases the big sneaky moves of the business. It shows how Apple grabbed the idea of the GUI from Xerox, how Microsoft got the first DOS from someone else, and how Microsoft started making its own interfaces. ââ¬Å"Pirates of Silicon Valleyâ⬠also paints an anecdotal picture of the insanity of Jobs and Gates Jobs incites cross product team food fights, Gates drives a bulldozer on the grounds of the Redmond campus. In my opinion the real protagonist of the story was Steve Jobs not only because he got featured more in the film but also I admire his determination to uplift the name of Apple. Sure, he got some attitude problem going on but he did become successful, right? He also had flair in talking people into something but you really would not want to cross him when heââ¬â¢s angry or everything will just come exploding. Reaction Paper free essay sample Unethical miners can dispense with the dams, to save costs, resulting in massive pollution downstream. In other cases, the tailings dam can overflow, and even breach, during periods of heavy rain. 4. Underground coal mining can require the removal of almost an entire layer of material deep under the surface. When the timber supports collapse, this can lead to subsidence. The subsidence can mean economic loss to people above or damage to natural areas. It can even cause cracks in river beds, leading to loss of river flow. . Some mining involves the inadvertent dispersal of heavy metals, such as lead, into the atmosphere. This can have serious health effects, including mental retardation in children. 6. Asbestos mining causes the dispersal of asbestos into the environment. This will cause deaths among local residents and workers, often several decades later. 2. What are the disadvantages of the small scale? The advantages and disadvantages of mining can be determined based on facts uncovered by scientists and by personal opinions. The Canadian government and the mining companies have very good plans and controls toward this problem, while ensuring the smooth running of the industries, and also helping to create strong economy and employment. The world of today could not exist without mineral products. Canada produces about 60 minerals and ranks first among producing countries1. As well, Canada is the largest exporter of minerals, with more than 20 per cent of production shipped to world markets2.In a typical year, the mining industry is responsible for almost 20 per cent of Canadas total export earnings3 (See Appendix A). As for the employment rate, over 70 per cent of the mines are owned by Canadians and Approximately 108,000 Canadians are directly employed in the mining industry4. Mining is very important in Canadian life. Not only do the products power the family car and heat the family home, the manufacturing sector, the high tech industries and even the better known resource industries are all dependent, in some way, on the mining industry. Reaction Paper free essay sample Sylvester Sign Language Reaction Paper 09/10/2013 The Sound and Fury Being a deaf is one of the most rare and difficult situation for many people. Many people have not experience being a deaf or even have deaf related or even have a deaf friend and that what makes deaf being ignored by these normal people. Deaf people have created their own community. Living in this community makes their lives a lot easier than lives in our community. I have never ever experience living or paving a friend who is a deaf, but knowing about their lives was one of my most wanted things. Watching this documentary about these two families have opened my eyes about who these people could communicate with others. These two families had the same situation with their children but one of them was negative while the other was more open mind. First, Heathers family. The father (Heather) wanted so badly his daughter to stay and dont implant the cochlear device, While the mother wasnt sure about that decision. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page She wanted first to see if she could herself have that device but was too hard because of her age. However, after a while they finally decided to not implant the cochlear device for their daughter and the daughter agreed with them especially after they moved to the other city where most of the people were deaf. On the other hand, the other family, where Peter was the son and he was too young and implanting the cochlear device at that age will have a great result likely. His parents wanted so badly to give him that device while his grandparents were not tit their side. They wanted to keep him living in deaf community. After a while his parents decided to implant the cochlear device for him and the surgery was successful and effective. After a month the result was as they wished and the kid could hear. In my opinion, the first family. I could understand their fear about how their daughter could become in the future and she might forget the sign language. But they should have given her all the opportunities. They had affected her decision y moving to the other city, even though, she was happier over there, but she was not old enough to make her own decision. They should have though more about her future. Live is not easy as how it used to be when her parents were growing up. They could let her live on both worlds even though if it was hard for her. On the other hand, the second family made the best decision as I can imagine how could be the live for that child in the future. They were thinking about his live and future more than about themselves and their society. They now gave him more opportunities to live with. Now he hears and even learns how to talk and deal with the normal people. As I have mention above live is getting more difficult. And people should think more about their new born deaf kids. They should give them all the opportunities. Being a deaf for the deaf people is fine but could limit their lives and make them being ignored by other people. The second Tamil did the surgery not because they d accept the deafness, but because they wanted their son to have a better future.

Free Essays on Cyberterrorism
In todayââ¬â¢s world large scale violence has become very common. To start off doing this, let us first look at the FBIââ¬â¢s working definition of cyber-terrorism. Rural Delivery Journal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Rural Delivery Journal - Essay Example My town is a small community at the base of a mountain range. Most residents of the community have lived in the area for multiple generations. My family has lived there for four generations, essentially the entire time since our ancestors immigrated to America. There is a single convenience store that serves the community. It sells gas and grocery items. The only other commercial/industrial building is the post office that serves the community. The post office is a remnant left from when the community was a railroad stop in the late 1800s. Regarding roads, there is an equal mixture of asphalt and gravel roads. No road is over two lanes, and it takes a journey to get to an interstate. Culturally, the community is very homogenous. The people are largely white and work in agriculture or blue collar manufacturing. Those with college degrees are few and far between. In fact, a college degree marks one as an outsider and as a ââ¬Å"city boyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"city girl.â⬠Politically, the people are divided between Democrat and Republican. The older residents are almost all Democrat because they believe that Hoover led them to the Great Depression, and Hoover was a Republican. Almost all of the younger residents are Republican because they value the right to bear arms and other conservative values. In addition, most people are religious, and the majority religion is Baptist. John Q. Student Professor Doe English 344 8 May 2000 ââ¬Å"Fish Cheeksâ⬠Journal I sympathize with how Tan felt at the Thanksgiving dinner. It is very difficult to be different from the norm. I have social phobia, and I am always very aware and self-conscious in social situations. Though I know that it is irrational, I feel like everyone is always watching me and judging me. I am sure that Tan felt that way for much of her life. I also am familiar with the situation that Tan is describing. I grew up in a very rural community. My parents, whom I love greatly, are not very educated and en joy the simple country life. I have always been different. I excelled in school and am enjoying college as well. But, every time I bring someone from college home, I feel very self-conscious. Since most of the people I attend college with are from middle-class suburban or urban families, I donââ¬â¢t feel like they can understand my family. My parentsââ¬â¢ grammar and topics of conversation are sometimes embarrassing. Like Tan, however, I am very proud of my family. I have skills and knowledge that many people I attend college with will never have. I can both hoe a row of corn and write an essay with equal skill. John Q. Student Professor Doe English 344 8 May 2000 ââ¬Å"Mary Ellenââ¬â¢s Storyâ⬠Journal The fact that three children die every day in the United States due to abuse is a startling and unforgivable statistic. As to why a parent would intentionally harm a child, I cannot think of any reasonable rationale. I understand that some parents are abused and then ab use their children. I also know that children can test the nerve of the parent to a great degree. However, there is never an excuse for abuse. I have a good explanation for the reason that child abuse goes unreported. Contemporary American society emphasizes the individual. Our society believes that the individual is the most important element. There is no concept of society as an organism in itself. The result of this belief is unfortunate. For instance, there are no laws protecting Good Samaritans in America. A person who

Education in soviet Ukraine in the post-world war 2 Essay
Education in soviet Ukraine in the post-world war 2 - Essay Example Then the Ukraineââ¬â¢s Peopleââ¬â¢s Republic was under the control of Soviet and then Ukraine Soviet Socialist Republic was formed. It was to become one of the establishing Republics of the Soviet Union. The 2nd world war that lasted for 60 long years and as a result had a drastic effect i.e., there was so many calamities across around the world, especially it was the nuclear weapons which used by US on Hiroshima, Japan. After the World War II, Ukraineââ¬â¢s history in the 20th century had witnessed the burden of a tyrannous Soviet government, Naziââ¬â¢s attacks and the ruling of Stalin. In 1991, it was the end for the Soviet Union; Ukraine became an independent and reforming a new statehood that entered into the 19th century. The decades of enmity between Russia and Ukraine, it used this opportunity to conquer the nation. Ukraine has developed a varied economy with the technology and manufacturing sector and the aviation force, space and defence industries. A considerable development of Ukraine in 1960 was the intellectual development. The intellectuals tried to achieve further freedom in national and civil rights. Some of them were coming out of the demand of culture and edu cation with the Jews. The 20th century of Ukraineââ¬â¢s history was noticeable for human cataclysm. The nation had a well educated population. Currently Ukraine is a presidential- parliamentary democracy which passed through a firm transition to the market economy. This caused emigration of people from the entire social circles.Previous emigration was held in the 19th and 20th centuries when peasants struggled for land and a better life, after the decline of attempts of founding an independent Ukraine in 1917 and also during and after the World War II.... uggled for land and a better life, after the decline of attempts of founding an independent Ukraine in 1917 and also during and after the World War II. A community of Ukraine came into being in a stable and intricate model of secular and religious organisations which came into existence in Australia in the 1940ââ¬â¢s, just after the arrival of Ukrainians from Europe. Ukrainians immigrated into Queensland from Russia in the early 20th centuries. Some of them got employed in China on the construction work of Manchurian railway during 1898-1903. A small number of political emigrants have anti-Tsarist political outlook. ââ¬Å"In addition to its advocacy of workers' interests, the Ukrainian Workers Circle, which was represented on the Brisbane Industrial Council of Trade Unions, organised a library that included works of Ukrainian literatureâ⬠(Ukrainians, 2001, p.354). From 1960, Ukraine gradually acquired the economic development. During the period 1945 and 1989, Ukrainians allo wed for the formation of State controlled organization for socio- cultural development. There started the development of education. The Ukraine union published nearly about 15 books in the Ukrainian language. In the period of post World War, they published around 40 books, which are mostly about the library and historical books. Their next works are the school handbooks. The minority of Ukraine prepared a program for popularisation of Ukrainian language. There were so many limitations for the Ukraine government; the educational system was developed with the institutions in Galicia and Lââ¬â¢viv. Lââ¬â¢viv has been an institution for higher education for over more than 500 years. According to the study in 2007, there are eight institutes, six academics, thirteen universities and a number of colleges in which

The influence of Norman Conquest on Old English Essay Example for Free
The influence of Norman Conquest on Old English Essay The world of Old English Literature underwent a radical upheaval due to the invasion of the new French Language and culture which was an aftermath of the Norman conquest of 1066 which set into motion a very different trend of life and literature in the island of Brittany. The influence of the Norman culture, especially its literary aspect is immense. The debts of the vernacular literature of France penetrated very little into the English soil as the French were no apostles of culture. However, the Norman Conquest forced English into a subservient position from which it only gradually re-emerged as a language simplified in structure and its spelling, vocabulary and literary expression were strongly influenced by the arrival of the French language and culture. It has been very rightly put by Sampson that the asperities of the Northern Ocean and the Baltic were softened by the waters of the Mediterranean. The English had always been a poetic race and the Norman Conquest enhanced this trait by introducing the Romance Vocabulary which seeped into the English language and made it more beautiful and apt for poetry. An exclusive aristocratic taste for the forms, tropes, and subjects of contemporary French Literature shifted the subjects of writing in English away from its old Germanic insularity towards a broader, shared, Western European pattern. The warrior hero hung up his sword, took up a musical instrument and began to sing songs of love. The Trouveres of Northern France influenced War poetry, allegory became a popular sub generic form, and the lyric and the Romance which started being penned brought out the best of the French rhyme and assonance which became the new mode for expression of poetic ideas. In short, the Norman Conquest replaced the sinister and melancholic psycho sphere of English with the clear blue sky of the French counter-part, decked with glamour and vitality of youthful spring. The Norman Conquest opened Englandââ¬â¢s doors to Continental Literature and the Englishmen came in contact with the culture of Bagdad, Spain and they also became aware of the wisdom of the East which greatly strengthened the impetus of learning. Learning and Literature further gained by the coming of great scholars like Lanfranc who opened the famous monastic school at Bec and also by the interconnection between great centers of learning like Paris and Oxford. As a result of the Norman Conquest, Wessex lost its political and cultural importance because of which its dialect of West Saxon which had established its supremacy in the Anglo-Saxon Age lost its former stronghold which led to the flourishing of other Middle English dialects as the writers were now encouraged to write in the dia lects of their own region. The newfound political, economic and geographical importance of London and not Winchester as the administrative center of the kingdom also helped to determine the future written and spoken forms of the ââ¬Ëstandard Englishââ¬â¢ of today. However, with the growing prestige and popularity of French, the native culture and language had to suffer from aristocratic unconcern and neglect. This is noticeable in the fact that the alliterative verses of the Anglo-Saxon Age were replaced by the French rhymed verses, although they revived again later in the mid fourteenth century. The Norman Conquest stands for much more than a change of rulers. It altered the socio-cultural life of England and imparted a higher and more sophisticated and specialized order of civilization. The English language lost its rigid inflexions and was enhanced by ornamental vocabulary. The writers of English, at school under the new masters of the land were able to give fuller expression to their creative impulses. The stage was set for the full blossoming of the genius of Chaucer.

Cultural Differentiation and Moral Orientation: Taking an Interest in H
Cultural Differentiation and Moral Orientation In contrast with his major ethical works, Kantââ¬â¢s writings on history are replete with the theme of the social character of moral development and the interdependence of individual and community. I argue that historical-moral progress is an important part of Kantââ¬â¢s comprehensive ethical theory. However, in order to link the moral goals of humanity with the moral goals of individuals, judgement must have a dimension that can apprehend the purposiveness of those human achievements which are social in their significance and socially transmitted. In other words, such achievements transcend individual intention. The ââ¬Ëhistorical signsââ¬â¢ of such moral purposiveness provide moral orientation through the conflicting claims that arise within and between complex and historically evolving human communities. I explore the role of disinterested judgement in providing this orientation and in marking the moral disposition of the species. In contrast with his major ethical works, Kantââ¬â¢s writings on history are replete with the theme of the social character of moral development and the interdependence of individual and community. Assuming for the moment that in some fundamental sense, moral decision making is an individual matter, how does the social context of human life affect morality? In particular what is the significance of the fact that our social structures are constituted over time? The thesis of this paper is that Kant's view on the nature of historical-moral progress is an important part of his comprehensive ethical theory. It sets the rational basis for the individual's moral obligation to promote the highest good by providing a moral orientation to guide her through the conflicting clai... ...al change is that while we can adjust our judgments concerning the culpability of past agents to their differing conditions, we cannot reverse or relativize our conception of what is right. Thus, the appropriate public can be extended across national boundaries as well as across time. Ansoff Matrix Essay
1ï ¼Å½ What are the four product growth strategies according to the Ansoff matrix? Critically evaluate each of them with an appropriate example of each. Answer1: (1) Product strategies for growth: a useful way of looking at growth opportunities is offered by the Ansoff Matrix as it is a practical framework for thinking about how growth can be achieved through product strategy. It comprises four general approaches to sales growth: market penetration/expansion, product development, market development and diversification. Market penetration and expansion are strategies relating to growing exiting products in existing markets. Market penetration depends on winning competitorsââ¬â¢ customers or buying competitors (thereby increasing market share). Defense of increased penetration may be through discouraging competitive entry. Market expansion may be through converting non-users to users or increasing usage rate. Although market share may not increase, sales growth is achieved through increasing market size. Product development is a strategy for developing new products for existing markets. It has three variants: extending existing product lines (brand extensions) to give current customers greater choice; product replacement (updates of old products); and innovation (developing fundamentally different products). Market development is a strategy for taking existing products and marketing them in new markets. This may be through the promotion of new uses of existing products to new customers, or the marketing of existing products to new market segments (e.g. overseas markets). Diversification (entry into new markets) is a strategy for developing new products for new markets. It is the most risky of the four growth strategies but also potentially the most rewarding. (2) For example: market penetration (Cadbury Schweppes did by increasing expenditure by 87 percent over a four-year period); market expansion (Kelloggââ¬â¢s has targeted lapsed breakfast cereal users who rediscover the pleasu re of eating cornflakes when feeding their children); product development (the development of the compact disc is an example); market development (Andy Thornton Ltd., an interior design business, successfully increased sales by entering Scandinavia and Germany, two geographic segments that provided new expansion opportunities for its services.); diversification (Sonyââ¬â¢s move into 8 mm camcorders) Answer2: Ansoff Matrix ( can deal with new product) In order to increase sales volume, Ansoff matrix provides a framework, by combining present product and new product, present market and new market into 2*2 matrixes, which are market penetration or expansion, product development, market development and diversification. 1. Existing product + existing market. The strategies for this matrix are market penetration or expansion. For penetration, the most basic way is to win competitorââ¬â¢s customers. This may be achieved by more effective use of promotion (compared with competitors) or distribution, or by cutting prices. Increasing promotional expenditure is another method of winning competitorsââ¬â¢ customers, as Cadbury did by increasing expenditure by 87 per cent over a four-year period. Another way to win competitorsââ¬â¢ customer is to buy competitors. The biggest advantage of this method is to capture customers immediately. Moreover, buying other rivals can also gain their limited resources and advanced skills and expertise. However, it also has its disadvantages, such as high cost of capital and risk. In addition, in order to protect gained penetration, a company has to discourage new competitors to enter into market. Barriers can be created by cost advantages. For example, low labor cost. Highly differentiated products and high switching costs as well as displaying aggressive tendencies to retaliate play a role in repelling new entrants. As for expansion, there are two methods to boost sales. One is to convert non-user to user, another is to increase usage rate. For example, carnation entered the powdered coffee whitening market with coffee mate, a key success factor was its ability to persuade hitherto non-user of powdered whiteners to switch from milk. 2. New product + existing market. The strategy for this category is product development. It can be achieved by three ways. The first way is innovation. Both extend existing product lines for giving customers more choices and add new feature to trigger the trading up can increase sale volume. The second way is product replacement, which involves the replacement of old brands/models with new one. This is common in car industry and often involves an upgrading of the old model with a new replacement. The final oneà is replacement of an old product with a fundamentally different one, often based on technology change. The development of CD is an example. 3ï ¼Å½ Existing product + new market. The strategy is market development, which entail promotions of existing product to a new market, or existing product to a new segment. For instance, nylon is marketed as a replacement of silk, but expanded into shirt, carpet and so on. For new segment, Andy Thornton Ltd. Successfully increased sales by entering Scandinavia and Germany, two geographic segments that provided new expansion opportunities for its services. 4ï ¼Å½ New product + new market. The strategy for it is entering into new markets (diversification). This is the most risky option, especially when the entry strategy is not based on the core competences. However, it can also be the most rewarding, as exemplified by Hondaââ¬â¢s move from motorcycles to cars and Sonyââ¬â¢s move into 8mm camcorders.

Urban Enterprise Zones
Some policies that could promote economic growth are tax rebates, lowering interest rates and developing Urban Enterprise Zones (UEZs). Providing rebates on home purchases, appliances and home upgrades encourages people to spend money. Lower interest rates work to stimulate home sales, credit card loans and investment in the stock market. UEZs offer lower tax rates, encouraging people to shop and spend money.2) Schumpeter's creative destruction describes how long-term economic growth is sustained by innovative entrepreneurs even when established companies are destroyed. This is less likely to occur in less developed countries because there are less entrepreneurs with less available funds than developed countries. This allows older companies, sometimes even monopolies, to maintain their position in the market.3) With reductions in government spending on higher education, the rate of growth in the United States will surely drop. Less government funding means many students will no longe r be able to afford the cost of tuition. This leads to an unskilled workforce and a downturn in economic growth. Less funding could also translate to lower quality in public colleges and universities. Many people rely on these institutions for respected degrees at a lower cost than private schools. This too would lead to less college graduates and again, an unskilled workforce.

Madam C.J. Walker, Innovator and Beauty Mogul
Madam C.J. Walker, Innovator and Beauty Mogul Madam C.J. Walker (December 23, 1867ââ¬âMay 25, 1919) was the business and chosen name of Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Davis Walker, who, along with friend and business associate Marjorie Joyner, revolutionized the hair care and cosmetics industry for African-American women early in the 20th century. Madam Walker was a self-made millionaire who leveraged her beauty product company to give African-American women a source of income and pride. Fast Facts: Madam C.J. Walker Known For: Businesswoman and self-made millionaire in the cosmetics industry for African American womenBorn: December 23, 1867 in Delta, LouisianaParents: Minerva Anderson and Owen BreedloveDied: May 25, 1919 in Irvington, New York.Education: Three months of formal grade school educationSpouse(s): Moses McWilliams (1884ââ¬â1888), John Davis (1894ââ¬â1903), Charles J. Walker (1906ââ¬â1912)Children: Lelia McWilliams (known later as ALelia Walker, born 1885) Early Life Madam C.J. Walker was born Sarah Breedlove on December 23, 1867, in a one-room cabin on the former plantation owned by Robert W. Burney in rural Louisiana near the town of Delta. The Burney plantation was also the site of the 1862ââ¬â1863 Battle of Vicksburg. Sarah was the youngest of five children of Owen and Minerva Anderson Breedlove, and the only one of those children born after the Emancipation Proclamation and therefore born free. Her mother Minerva died in 1873, possibly of cholera, and her father remarried and then died himself in 1875. Sarah and her older sister Louvenia survived by working in the cotton fields of Delta and Vicksburg in Mississippi; her sister eventually married Jesse Powell, who Madam Walker later said abused her. Marriage and Family In 1884 at the age of 14, Sarah married laborer Moses McWilliams, in part to escape Jesse Powell, and she gave birth to her only child, daughter Leila, on June 6, 1885. After her husbands death (or disappearance) in 1884, she traveled to St. Louis to join her four brothers who had established themselves as barbers. Working as a laundrywoman, she managed to save enough money to educate her daughter and became involved in activities with the National Association of Colored Women. In 1894, she met and married fellow laundry worker John H. Davis. During the 1890s, Walker began to suffer from a scalp ailment that caused her to lose some of her hair, a condition likely caused by the harshness of the available products and her profession as a laundrywoman. Embarrassed by her appearance, she experimented with a variety of home-made remedies and products made by another black entrepreneur named Annie Malone. Her marriage to Davis ended in 1903, and in 1905, Walker became a sales agent for Malone and moved to Denver. Madam Walkers Wonderful Hair Grower In 1906, Sarah married newspaper advertising salesman Charles Joseph Walker. Sarah Breedlove changed her name to Madam C.J. Walker and founded her own business. She sold her own hair product called Madam Walkers Wonderful Hair Grower, a scalp conditioning and healing formula. To promote her products, she embarked on an exhausting sales drive throughout the South and Southeast, going door to door, giving demonstrations and working on sales and marketing strategies. In 1908, she opened a college in Pittsburgh to train her hair culturists. Eventually, her products formed the basis of a thriving national corporation that at one point employed over 3,000 people. Her expanded product line was called the Walker System, which offered a broad variety of cosmetics and pioneered new ways of marketing. She licensed Walker Agents and Walker Schools that offered meaningful employment and personal growth to thousands of African-American women. Although she did have some store-front beauty shops, most Walker Agents ran their shops from their homes or sold products door-to-door. Walkerââ¬â¢s aggressive marketing strategy combined with her relentless ambition led to her becoming the first known female African-American woman self-made millionaire. Death and Legacy Having amassed a fortune over a period of 15 years, she became an important member of New Yorks Harlem society. She built a fabulous mansion on the Hudson River in Irvington, New York, completed in June 1918 and called Villa Lewaro (a reference to Leila Walker Robinson suggested by friend Enrico Caruso). The 34-room, 20,000 square foot Italianate-style residence was a gathering place for friends and colleagues in the Harlem Renaissance, including W.E.B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes.à Walker also became involved in charities, contributing scholarship funds to Tuskegee Institute, raised funds to help establish a YMCA for black youth, and delivered lectures on political, economic, and social issues for various black institutions. She was, however, growing ill. Diagnosed with nephritis in November 1917, Madam C.J. Walker took ill while on a business trip to St. Louis and was quickly taken home in a private railroad car. She died on May 25, 1919, in Irvington at the age of 52. Her prescription for success was a combination of perseverance, hard work, faith in herself and in God, honest business dealings, and quality products. There is no royal flower-strewn path to success, she once observed. And if there is, I have not found it. For if I have accomplished anything in life, it is because I have been willing to work hard. Improved Permanent Wave Machine Long after Madam Walkers death, her empire persisted, producing and selling beauty care products until the 1980s. Marjorie Joyner, an employee of her empire, invented an improved permanent wave machine. This device was patented in 1928 and was designed to curl or perm womenââ¬â¢s hair for a relatively lengthy period of time. The wave machine turned out to be popular among white and black women and allowed for longer-lasting wavy hairstyles. Joyner went on to become a prominent figure in Madam CJ Walkerââ¬â¢s industry, though she never profited directly from her invention. The invention was the assigned intellectual property of the Walker Company. Sources Bundles, ALelia. On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C.J. Walker.
