Whole Foods Market, Inc. - 1162 Words

Kayla Avery 10k Analysis CBAD 478 May 22nd, 2016 Whole Foods Market, Inc. was founded and created by four business people in Austin, TX during 1980. The founders opened Whole Foods Market because they wanted a supermarket that offered natural foods. This company was able to be successful because at the time they opened there were less than half a dozen natural food supermarkets in the United Sates. In 1984, they build stores in Houston and Dallas, they then moved to New Orleans, and eventually to the West Coast. A major part of Whole Foods growth has come from the many mergers and acquisitions with companies that have occurred throughout the years. The mergers and acquisitions gave Whole Foods’ even revenues to move to the East Coast.†¦show more content†¦Whole Foods’ launched their mobile application and started offering the grocery delivery to try and stay ahead of their competition. A strategy of Whole Foods’ in 2014 and 2015 was to be disciplined and opportunistic with their real estate purchases . They prefer to open new stores in existing areas and then expand into new areas. Since 2011, Whole Foods’ has opened 100 stores, which is great for growth, but was a huge part of their decline in 2015. As previously mentioned, Whole Foods’ opened 38 new stores in 2015. This large expansion of stores allowed them to produce $1.1 billion in cash flows from their operations, invest $851 million in capital expenditures, and resulted in a free cash flow of $278 million. Those numbers were wonderful for the companies’ shareholders, who got $184 million in quarterly dividends. In 2015, they focused too much on opening new stores, rather than focusing on preexisting stores. Customers said their stores are getting â€Å"shabby with mediocre customer service† (Whole Foods’ Sales). This was a huge turn off for many people, especially when they can go to a store like Sprouts, spend less and get just better service, and natural food. The three-year trend for Whole Foods’ was doing very well until this year, as seen below (WFM Gross Profit Margin (TTM)). The average weekly sales per store hit a record high in 2014 reaching $722,000 and stores that are comparable in

Maintaining Romantic Relationships Free Essays

Maintaining Romantic Relationships When two people choose to forge an interpersonal involvement through communication and believe the bond to be romantic, they have chosen to be in a romantic relationship with one another. In the beginning, being in a romantic relationship seems effortless, magical, and exhilarating. This is before conflict arises and negative emotions cause things to get real and bring the relationship down from cloud nine. We will write a custom essay sample on Maintaining Romantic Relationships or any similar topic only for you Order Now While enjoying the initial stages of the relationship is important, it is also imperative that the two individuals are simultaneously building a foundation of appreciation, respect, forgiveness, and trust. Without this effort, once the â€Å"honeymoon stage† is over, the relationship will most likely crumble and leave both partakers hurt and confused (McCornack 326). With this said, a romantic relationship is one of the most rewarding, complex, and significant entities in a person’s life, and though it seems as if maintaining one should come easily, at times it can be one of the most difficult challenges. However, if effective communication is executed and both partners share the desire to be together, the challenges of misunderstanding one another and accepting shortcomings can be surmounted and a successful romantic relationship can be achieved. Because there are two people deeply invested emotionally, mentally, and possibly physically in a romantic relationship, the stakes are higher than those in a friendship. The chance of actions and words exchanged causing destruction to a point of no retribution is greater than in a platonic relationship, where forgiveness is more easily granted. In an intimate relationship, both people must meet each other halfway. The inherit nature of the human race is to focus primarily on personal needs, but in a committed romantic relationship it is important that the needs of the other partner are also taken into consideration, which may require compromise on how communication and expression of feelings are exchanged. Typically men are less sensitive than women, causing many unnecessary disagreements between the two. Men need to realize that at times the criticism or suggestions they believe will be helpful actually sound mean and hurtful to women, and women should realize that usually men do not have negative intentions with their blunt words but instead do not know any other way to communicate as they were created to interact that way. A helpful tactic in preserving an intimate relationship is for the couple to be able â€Å"to create and maintain ‘positive illusions’ about each other, that is to be less negative and more kind in their evaluation and feedback of their partners, [which] can help to enhance relationship satisfaction† (â€Å"How to Build Maintain Happy Intimate Relationships†). This applies to both sides of the relationship. For example, the man can be gentler in his communication and the woman less harassing in hers, resulting in both of them being happier with the way they are treated, bringing them closer together. Partners are happier and more committed when positive interactions between partners outweigh negative ones by a ratio of at least 5:1† (â€Å"How to Build Maintain Happy Intimate Relationships†). The risks are greater in a romantic relationship than in a platonic one, but so are the rewards, causing the necessary determination and effort worth th e gamble. As life progresses, changes are inevitable, and relationships are affected by the continuing evolution of a person’s life. An individual’s wants and needs change as a relationship develops, and this change should be embraced as an opportunity for the relationship to grow and reach a deeper level instead of resisted and ignored. By periodically setting aside time to check in with one another on these changes, the couple can assure that they are aware of the other’s changing expectations and goals, therefore enhancing the intensity of their connection (â€Å"Building a Healthy Relationship from the Start†). Sometimes, couples forget that they must make the conscious effort to keep the relationship going, which leads to it falling into a rut. Thus the exploration of each other’s hobbies and interests is essential in maintaining the excitement of sharing experiences with one another (â€Å"Building a Healthy Relationship from the Start†). Having a significant other is like always having a best friend around, but better because there is affection and deeper feelings involved. The point of a best friend is to have someone to share enjoyable experiences with, so to not include one another in activities and adventures in an intimate relationship is counter-intuitive and defeats one of the main purposes of being in one. Long-term relationships are difficult because sometimes the couple loses sight of why they are together in the first place. They begin to view the relationship as a job instead of a thrilling, positive addition to their lives. From personal experience, I know that even though avoiding this unfortunate situation sounds simple enough, it can happen all too easily, for I am guilty of it as well. A year ago, after I realized that my relationship with my boyfriend was becoming more stressful than fulfilling, I knew I had to make a change. I told him that I wanted to be â€Å"the cherry on top of his life sundae† and be a positive appendage to his life instead of an exhausting obligation. By this time it was too late and we broke up for a few months. I feel as though if my boyfriend and I had taken the time to sit down and talk to each other about the changes that were occurring in our lives and in our relationship, as well as make the effort to experience fun activities together instead of falling into a routine of going to each other’s houses with the occasional trip to the movie theater, our relationship might not have transformed into such a tense monster that seemed to spiral out of our control. When conflict arises, communication is the key to a resolution. Because a common source of conflict is unrealistic or unreasonable expectations, the two members of a relationship must be willing to be open and honest about what they anticipate from one another and whether these expectations are being met (â€Å"Building a Healthy Relationship from the Start†). Each of the romantic partners must be willing to attempt to see the issue from the other’s point of view. Sometimes, the way that conflict is dealt with speaks enormously about a person’s past experiences and family history. No two people have grown up exactly the same, so it is impossible for two people to have the exact same way of dealing with issues. In some families, communication is not a big priority, yet in others it is constant. It is important for an individual to be aware of his or her partner’s background so that an understanding can be met and communication can effectively solve an issue instead of prolonging it. Another important aspect of solving a conflict is timing. There is no perfect time for a conflict to occur, but the partakers of one have control over when they solve it. In the past, it was believed that it was best to never leave a fight unresolved and that the issue should be fixed immediately; however, it is now recommended that people take some time to â€Å"cool off† so that hurtful things are not said that could potentially cause irreversible damage to the relationship (â€Å"Building a Healthy Relationship from the Start†). This personal time can allow each person to alleviate the initial anger or hurt and rationalize their thoughts. The most important aspect in the approach to solving a conflict is for both partners to do their best to communicate in a way that the other will understand. The main obstacle that makes maintaining a romantic relationship so challenging is that men and women communicate so differently, and it is impossible for them to ever communicate in the same manner no matter how much each of them try. When it comes to communication, men and women are on two completely different planets, stated by the best-selling book, Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. In this relationship guide, the author John Gray states, â€Å"Men are motivated when they feel needed while women are motivated when they feel cherished† (â€Å"Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus Quotes†). This could not be truer. Men approach the world with the mindset that they are an individual in a hierarchy where life is a contest of social order, while women engage the world â€Å"as an individual in a network of connections† where life is a community and the main focus is to evade isolation and sustain intimacy (Tannen, Ph. D. 24-25). For effective communication to occur, understanding and compromise must be implemented. This is vital in maintaining a healthy romantic relationship because ineffective communication leads to frustration, confusion, and eventually termination. In order to avoid this, both the man and the woman in the relationship must be willing to accept each other’s way of interacting, even if it seems strange or ridiculous. To many people, opening the lines of communication seems impossible because they view the difficulty of communicating as an inevitable problem and a flaw of the other person. However, this is not the case, and it is achievable as long as both partners are prepared to attempt to see communication from the other’s point of view (Tannen, Ph. D. 297-298). There is no one set way to do anything in life; instead, there are many methods of approaching an issue or situation and the â€Å"right† one depends on personal preference. This applies to maintaining a romantic relationship as well. Each couple has their own unique way of interacting with one another, and in each of those couples, the man and the woman also have different ways of communicating and expressing themselves. John Gray also wrote in his book, â€Å"When men and women are able to respect and accept their differences then love has a chance to blossom† (†Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus Quotes†). A relationship cannot grow without proper communication, and for this to be accomplished both partners must be willing to give up their stubborn pride and come to terms with the fact that their way of handling situations is not the only way. Once this level of respect is present, misunderstandings will be a misfortune of the past. The best approach to maintaining a healthy intimate relationship is to not overlook each other’s flaws and shortcomings but to accept and embrace them. Though this can be challenging and at times overwhelming, the success of maintaining a romantic relationship is one of the most fulfilling triumphs known to mankind. A New Sense Of Life Essay Example For Students

A New Sense Of Life Essay A New Sense of LifeIn Baldwins Discovery of What it Means to Be an American, it was said that to be an American was a truly free feeling. The fact is you could change yourself mid-life and still hold worth and prowess. The idea of being considered a great author, and also as being a great actor, holds different places here in America then in Europe, or even Canada. Most places would hold the profession of an author to have more of an elegance then an actor. The author holds more intellectual ground, then that of one who can act out a part and memorize lines. (Not so much as the idea of being a writer, then an actor, but how you present yourself.) If someone asks you, Who are you?, you might simply answer, I am a carpenter. or I am a congressman. Say you have a job that would not be as high on the social ladder as these. For example, use the profession of a garbage man. He gets paid as much as the carpenter, but in society, that profession isnt looked upon like a carpenter, or a congressman. Along the same lines, a congressman, or even a carpenter, can turn around at the pinnacle of his career, and choose to be a garbage man, if thats what his heart seeks. America has a view unlike any other nation, in which you can start over at any time. You can take control of your life by going back to school, learning what you want to, thus becoming something completely different at the age of 50. Unlike many eastern nations, where you are dedicated to that one job concept, (IE. If youre an incredible trumpet player, you will be that for the rest of your life, and thats that), in America you have the option to move about in the job market, to try out different professions, and feel your way through life. You can see evidence of that by the fact junior colleges are very popular among older people. In America, you are allowed to go to school for the rest of your life if you want to, and the school will work around your current employment schedule. The meaning of life in America is different than that of any other country. You can go where you want and be whomever you want. It is called the pursuit of happiness. Ill use me as an example. Im currently working as a computer salesman for Gateway Computers. On the side, Im reading and learning about the A+ certification to become a computer technician, so I can move out of my current profession as a salesman and into one of a technician. In America you always have the option of bettering yourself. America is the path of gold to anything and everything in life. You can achieve whatever you can muster, and are encouraged to do your best every step of the way. You can take your life, completely turn it around at any point, and become someone you werent 3 days prior. In Japan, for example, this would be unheard of. If youre in college, you would identify yourself as a student. Later in life, you would say youre a businessman, or woman, or a professional, and that is what you would be. The changing of professions in Japan is extremely rare and seldom considered. In the land of America, it is always an option. You can always better yourself, and become a better you.English

This semester I enrolled in Speech1017 instructed by Professor Canuto. During my time in the class I have learned the functions of communication, models of communication, misconception of communication, and human communication. This class is very informative; each day there’s a new lesson about communication, how communication affects who you interact with, your culture, and how other ethnicity communicate with each other. But the lesson that has been a favorite of mine is Chapter 2 The changing world of communication. Chapter 2 described how communication evolved through the centuries and how technology also evolved with communication. Professor Canuto would show video clips that relate to the topic, if there is a statistic she would have a video relating to the statistic that makes lesson worth listening to. There was a lesson explaining how communicating went from face-to-face communicating to texting. I could relate to the topic because I fear talking to anyone I do not know, but if could get any girl number and randomly text them I’ll do that any day, because it seems like when talking face-to-face with someone you don’t know, you think insecure thoughts about yourself how you look, how you speak to that person, constantly thinking if he/she doesnt like you. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Professor Canuto can relate to the students within the class she is young so the events that happens in a young adults daily life. In Chapter 2 the Professor explains how communication is diverse different parts of the U. S. contains Americans who communicate the same but when another American foreign to that part of the U. S. will be in confusion not only in communication, in how they dress and different phrases they use in their vocabulary would be foreign to another person from outside their region but they all live within the same country. I believe that the class needs no changes the Professor teaches at a peace that every student can  follow along to. Professor Canuto is always happy but that’s needed because the morning can make you look dead but her optimism helps ease the depression. Speech has become important to me, learning the origins of communication answers questions that are asked every day. I’m looking forward to actually speaking reading speeches improving speaking in front of people killing my glossophobia. Speech has never been a big factor in my life I didnt really knew what the subject was about but Professor Canuto explains thoroughly every segment in each lesson given. Reaction paper free essay sample I. INTRODUCTION Having an educational field trip as a student of BAM – IM at the AZUCARERA in tarlac on February 21, 2014 for half a day after the first plant visit, we had a good impact for our perspective in our course. Hacienda Luisita is popular sugar cane farm inTarlac. It was owned by the Cojuangco’s and had a lot of history through the years. It’s a 4. 435 hectares, like the size of Makati and Pasig City combined. It is very huge and a lot of farmers are working for the farm. It was shown how the company values there menpower, instead of calling them farmer, they call them planters as a sign of respect for the hard work that they are doing. They also value teamwork and cooperation. They treat each other as a family and makes sure that everyone has something out of there hard work. II. RATIONALE Field trips are important because it gives students a chance to learn hands on. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Also, traveling will give them a chance to see different places and learn new things up close and personal. Field trips are good learning tools which many universities always do. III. OBJECTIVES To be able to see personally how an industrial company works. To know how to manage an industrial company. To know the purpose and how innovation in an industrial company happens. IV. SUMMARY AND CONTENT This is the second plant visit we went is the Azacurera de Tarlac, we stayed for bus for half an hour, and when the first batch are done, we are the next, maybe the second to the last who will be tour of the company, we wore an helmet for our safety because the tour guide told us that sometimes an object falling from the top, and sometimes the helmet cracks, that’s why we wore an helmet. Before we go to the production he lecture us a little information of what is azucarera is, after that we fall in line and go to the production, we first see the truck of sugarcane where falling from a hole, then after that we go to the production site, and there we can see how they create a sugar, I noticed again that some of the construction worker are not wearing proper PPE or personal protective equipment, and they also don’t have hazard signs, I think some of their machines are dangerous to approach, some of the machine are not lecture to us, we just exceeded some of them, that’s why we don’t know what machine and description. V. REACTION PAPER POSITIVE: The positive of this, is when we’re in production all of the construction worker and other stuff there welcome us with a smile and there so kind when there touring us to the production site, even the construction worker are telling us what machine is their handling, and they even approach us near to see the machines. Much of the sugar comes from tarlac. That’s why we should be proud of this. NEGATIVE: Same of the enerrtech, here in azucarera, their not wearing proper PPE or personal protective equipment, the company should be aware of this, there should be thinking of their employees health or safety, because most of them are not proper uniform, it should be complete, because for me, safety first. If something happen to their employees there will be the one who will be responsible to them, some place don’t have hazard signs, I think some of machine are very dangerous to approach, they should be alert of this. VI. CONCLUSION VII. RECOMMENDATION Based on my observation, the challenges that the company should overcome will be the safety of there employees. The employee who was there doesn’t have personal protective equipments like helmets, gloves and even proper uniform. With the kind of work they are doing, it’s very essential for the employees to be protected. It will take a big damage to the company and its reputation if there will be an accident and no preventive measure has been taken. Another thing was the hazzard sign, it is also essential to have signs especially to machines that need extra carefulness when being handled. What I am trying to point is, the safetiness of the employees should always be a priority because the company’s manpower is one of the key to its success, without them there will be no production. Reaction Paper free essay sample As students we go to school to learn, and that is why we attend our classes every day to learn so that our knowledge will increase, but as college students we are also obligated to attend seminars. Attending seminars is also important to shape the students to become more knowledgeable and professional and now we for the first time I attended a seminar which I know I can learn new things and discover more facts about life. For me attending in the seminars means added knowledge for us students to gain. I can say that the last seminar we attended is indeed enjoyable and we learned a lot from the speakers. Let us start with the guest speaker Dr. Honorato P. Panahon. He discussed about values and professionalism. I learn about dos and don’ts as being a professional someday. I also learned that as Information Technology students, our professionalism depends on the knowledge we gain in our schools that is why values and professional ethics is very important and must be known by all the Information Technology students so they will not violate any professional ethics code someday. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page There is also a short story that was told by Dr. Panahon. To cut the story short, the story wants us to learn that there are many people in the world with different behaviors that is why all of them has characteristics which can lead them to make unethical actions sometimes. The next guess speaker was Dr. Zenaida R. Guillasper. She told us everything that we need to know about spiritual education. My spirit was uplift every time we pray. I can feel that God’s blessing is coming from the heaver upon the earth. Actually she also tell that there are many hindrance along the way before she reached us and tell us the words of God but still she was able to tell us a wonderful speech about God. Dr. Guillasper wanted us to realize that we must love God, accept him as our savior, and repent with our sins. The last guess speaker was DR. Melissa Belinda P. Faronilo, Back then when I was taking up nursing in the same university, Dr. Faronilo was my professor in Psychology, and she is one of my favorite professors because of her wit. That is why, when I saw her in the stage, I know the discussion will be very enjoyable and at the same time informative. The discussion is fun, because we now know that we can identify our psychological behavior depends on our favorite shapes. Reaction Paper free essay sample The film was narrated by Steve Wozniak, co-developer of the Apple computer. The movie took off with Steve Jobs talking in a melodramatic way to the audience, it seems but as the angle of the scene shifts, it was shown that he was actually talking to a director and that they were currently in the middle of shooting a commercial which is for the Apple Computer. The scene then changes showing Steve Jobs talking about some sort of alliance formed between Apple Computer and Microsoft with Bill Gates in the screen (details of this scene was showed later on in the film). Then the film featured a flashback on the younger days of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak where they are shown to be caught up in a riot between students and police officers and running in the opposite direction of the tide of people. The movie then proceeds to narrate the events that led to the development of the first Apple computer. We will write a custom essay sample on Reaction Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The film also features the nerd character of Bill Gates who was then a nobody and even got ignored by Steve Jobs in a computer expo. The story then narrates how competition flared between the two leading companies and how they strived to outwit each other and finally, concluding in the scene where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates announced that they are good together. Bill Gates (Anthony Michael Hall overplaying Machiavelli) and Steve Jobs (Noah Wyle overplaying the hypocritical hippie). In the wings with one liners and side explanations are the designer of the Mac, Steve Wozniak (Joey Slotnick), and the two most famous right hand men of Microsoft, Paul Allen (Josh Hopkins) and Steve Ballmer (John Di Maggio). The film dutifully details the skyrocketing of Apple from a manufacturer of the first cookie cutter color PCs (the Apple II that didnt leave your high school until well after you did) to one of the biggest personal computer companies to the giant taken down by the people that helped build it up (dont you know, Microsoft helped make the original Macintosh operating system). The movie also showcases the big sneaky moves of the business. It shows how Apple grabbed the idea of the GUI from Xerox, how Microsoft got the first DOS from someone else, and how Microsoft started making its own interfaces. â€Å"Pirates of Silicon Valley† also paints an anecdotal picture of the insanity of Jobs and Gates Jobs incites cross product team food fights, Gates drives a bulldozer on the grounds of the Redmond campus. In my opinion the real protagonist of the story was Steve Jobs not only because he got featured more in the film but also I admire his determination to uplift the name of Apple. Sure, he got some attitude problem going on but he did become successful, right? He also had flair in talking people into something but you really would not want to cross him when he’s angry or everything will just come exploding. Reaction Paper free essay sample Unethical miners can dispense with the dams, to save costs, resulting in massive pollution downstream. In other cases, the tailings dam can overflow, and even breach, during periods of heavy rain. 4. Underground coal mining can require the removal of almost an entire layer of material deep under the surface. When the timber supports collapse, this can lead to subsidence. The subsidence can mean economic loss to people above or damage to natural areas. It can even cause cracks in river beds, leading to loss of river flow. . Some mining involves the inadvertent dispersal of heavy metals, such as lead, into the atmosphere. This can have serious health effects, including mental retardation in children. 6. Asbestos mining causes the dispersal of asbestos into the environment. This will cause deaths among local residents and workers, often several decades later. 2. The Canadian government and the mining companies have very good plans and controls toward this problem, while ensuring the smooth running of the industries, and also helping to create strong economy and employment. The world of today could not exist without mineral products. Canada produces about 60 minerals and ranks first among producing countries1. As well, Canada is the largest exporter of minerals, with more than 20 per cent of production shipped to world markets2.In a typical year, the mining industry is responsible for almost 20 per cent of Canadas total export earnings3 (See Appendix A). As for the employment rate, over 70 per cent of the mines are owned by Canadians and Approximately 108,000 Canadians are directly employed in the mining industry4. Mining is very important in Canadian life. Not only do the products power the family car and heat the family home, the manufacturing sector, the high tech industries and even the better known resource industries are all dependent, in some way, on the mining industry. Reaction Paper free essay sample Sylvester Sign Language Reaction Paper 09/10/2013 The Sound and Fury Being a deaf is one of the most rare and difficult situation for many people. Many people have not experience being a deaf or even have deaf related or even have a deaf friend and that what makes deaf being ignored by these normal people. Deaf people have created their own community. Living in this community makes their lives a lot easier than lives in our community. I have never ever experience living or paving a friend who is a deaf, but knowing about their lives was one of my most wanted things. Watching this documentary about these two families have opened my eyes about who these people could communicate with others. These two families had the same situation with their children but one of them was negative while the other was more open mind. First, Heathers family. The father (Heather) wanted so badly his daughter to stay and dont implant the cochlear device, While the mother wasnt sure about that decision. On the other hand, the other family, where Peter was the son and he was too young and implanting the cochlear device at that age will have a great result likely. His parents wanted so badly to give him that device while his grandparents were not tit their side. They wanted to keep him living in deaf community. After a while his parents decided to implant the cochlear device for him and the surgery was successful and effective. After a month the result was as they wished and the kid could hear. In my opinion, the first family. I could understand their fear about how their daughter could become in the future and she might forget the sign language. But they should have given her all the opportunities. They had affected her decision y moving to the other city, even though, she was happier over there, but she was not old enough to make her own decision. They should have though more about her future. Live is not easy as how it used to be when her parents were growing up. They could let her live on both worlds even though if it was hard for her. On the other hand, the second family made the best decision as I can imagine how could be the live for that child in the future. They were thinking about his live and future more than about themselves and their society. They now gave him more opportunities to live with. Now he hears and even learns how to talk and deal with the normal people. As I have mention above live is getting more difficult. And people should think more about their new born deaf kids. They should give them all the opportunities. Being a deaf for the deaf people is fine but could limit their lives and make them being ignored by other people. The second Tamil did the surgery not because they d accept the deafness, but because they wanted their son to have a better future.

Free Essays on Cyberterrorism

In today’s world large scale violence has become very common. Attacks such as the sarin gas released in Tokyo’s subway by the group Aum Shinrikyo, the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, and most recently the destruction of the Twin Towers in New York City on September 11th, have proven that terrorist attacks are getting bigger, and that the potential for a massive attack is certainly present. This potential for an attack combined with the ever-growing usage of computers around the world, and the new computer systems created daily make it is easy to see that there could be large attacks on any government by way of a computer. Jim Petroni of the California Specialized Training Institute in San Luis Obispo states that cyber-terrorism is â€Å"...like any crime. It’s just a matter of time before someone puts together the mode, the opportunity and the motivation.† (â€Å"New Security Threats†, Feb 3, 1997) Now that it is easy to under stand that an attack is very possible, it is necessary to define what exactly is a cyber-terrorist, and what types of things that cyber-terrorists do, and what exactly the government is doing in order to protect against an attack. To start off doing this, let us first look at the FBI’s working definition of cyber-terrorism. The FBI defines cyber-terrorism as â€Å"the premeditated politically motivated attack against information, computer systems, computer programs, and data which result in violence against noncombatant targets by sub-national groups or clandestine agents.† (â€Å"Seminar On Cyberterrorism†, Apr 16, 1998) This is a good definition of cyber-terrorism, but it cannot be fully understood unless the reader understands what constitutes an act of cyber-terrorism. A terrorist can use a computer in three ways that are seen as acts of cyber-terrorism. These are as a physical means of accomplishing a terrorist act, the storage of information the terrorist uses, and the actual ... Rural Delivery Journal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Rural Delivery Journal - Essay Example My town is a small community at the base of a mountain range. Most residents of the community have lived in the area for multiple generations. My family has lived there for four generations, essentially the entire time since our ancestors immigrated to America. There is a single convenience store that serves the community. It sells gas and grocery items. The only other commercial/industrial building is the post office that serves the community. The post office is a remnant left from when the community was a railroad stop in the late 1800s. Regarding roads, there is an equal mixture of asphalt and gravel roads. No road is over two lanes, and it takes a journey to get to an interstate. Culturally, the community is very homogenous. The people are largely white and work in agriculture or blue collar manufacturing. Those with college degrees are few and far between. In fact, a college degree marks one as an outsider and as a â€Å"city boy† or â€Å"city girl.† Politically, the people are divided between Democrat and Republican. The older residents are almost all Democrat because they believe that Hoover led them to the Great Depression, and Hoover was a Republican. Almost all of the younger residents are Republican because they value the right to bear arms and other conservative values. In addition, most people are religious, and the majority religion is Baptist. John Q. Student Professor Doe English 344 8 May 2000 â€Å"Fish Cheeks† Journal I sympathize with how Tan felt at the Thanksgiving dinner. It is very difficult to be different from the norm. I have social phobia, and I am always very aware and self-conscious in social situations. Though I know that it is irrational, I feel like everyone is always watching me and judging me. I am sure that Tan felt that way for much of her life. I also am familiar with the situation that Tan is describing. I grew up in a very rural community. My parents, whom I love greatly, are not very educated and en joy the simple country life. I have always been different. I excelled in school and am enjoying college as well. But, every time I bring someone from college home, I feel very self-conscious. Since most of the people I attend college with are from middle-class suburban or urban families, I don’t feel like they can understand my family. My parents’ grammar and topics of conversation are sometimes embarrassing. Like Tan, however, I am very proud of my family. I have skills and knowledge that many people I attend college with will never have. I can both hoe a row of corn and write an essay with equal skill. John Q. Student Professor Doe English 344 8 May 2000 â€Å"Mary Ellen’s Story† Journal The fact that three children die every day in the United States due to abuse is a startling and unforgivable statistic. As to why a parent would intentionally harm a child, I cannot think of any reasonable rationale. I understand that some parents are abused and then ab use their children. I also know that children can test the nerve of the parent to a great degree. However, there is never an excuse for abuse. I have a good explanation for the reason that child abuse goes unreported. Contemporary American society emphasizes the individual. Our society believes that the individual is the most important element. There is no concept of society as an organism in itself. The result of this belief is unfortunate. For instance, there are no laws protecting Good Samaritans in America. A person who
